Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Photo upload can fail for various reasons. The error report in app settings may provide details. Possible solutions include: if the free API is overloaded, you may want to enter your own Gemini API key, or if the AI instructions are insufficient, expand the instructions.

With VocVantage you can learn vocabulary and flashcards offline – including with local AI:

• Local & offline features (no internet required & free): The seven-level Leitner system (multiple choice, déjà vu, writing, handwriting, pronunciation), standard learning statistics, PDF printing for flashcards & lists, local photo import methods (AI Classic Local, AI Segments Local, AI Hybrid Local) and local AI models (Local LLMs for offline chat, stories & example sentences – download local models once beforehand, see Case 14).
• Cloud features & downloads (internet required): Managed cloud AI (AI LLM Cloud, AI Hybrid Cloud and AI analytics through the Gemini API) and downloading vocabulary packages or language models require internet access.

The provider does not store content submitted for these cloud AI features or generated responses in its own backend. Google's processing and retention are explained in the cloud AI privacy information .

Regional cloud selection: If the app detects the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, managed cloud AI uses only Gemini projects with active billing. This also applies within the free app's cloud quota. Outside these regions, Free Tier projects may also be used subject to Google's terms; copyright markings are additionally considered.

Your own API key: You can still use your own Gemini key. Your Google project is subject to the same regional requirements; billing must be enabled in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. Local language models run on the device after download and incur no Gemini API charges.

VocVantage uses a seven-level Leitner system with spaced repetition:

• Seven levels towards long-term memory: Each new word starts at level 1. Answer correctly in a session and it moves up a level, to be reviewed at increasing intervals. Difficult vocabulary you have not yet mastered is practised more frequently.
• Varied learning methods: Combine multiple choice (quickly selecting an answer), déjà vu (quick review), writing (keyboard or handwriting) and speaking (pronunciation recording & listening comprehension) in both language directions.
• Targeted exam practice: Create learning goals with a target date (Case 2) and, shortly before tests or exams, use the filter “Almost there (>80%)”.

With VocVantage you can switch from your smartphone to real paper at any time – unlimited and free, even in the free version:

1. In the app, open Import/Export or vocabulary management.
2. Filter vocabulary by book, chapter, topic group or learning goal and select the words you want.
3. Tap PDF export / Print and choose between compact vocabulary lists (study sheets) or physical flashcards.
4. When printing double-sided (duplex), the front (foreign word) and back (translation, phonetic transcription & example sentence) are aligned precisely for cutting out (see also Case 18).

Save yourself typing out vocabulary pages in just seconds (video guide in Case 5):

1. In VocVantage, open Import & Export → Photo import and select the relevant book (or create a new one).
2. Photograph the book page, worksheet or handwritten notes with the camera (or choose an image from your gallery).
