Privacy policy
This privacy policy applies to the mobile application VocVantage (referred to below as the “Application”), provided by Matthias Kammerer (referred to below as the “Service Provider”) as a commercial service.
1. Data collection and use
The application requires a local user profile to function. The following data is processed:
- First name and surname
- Native language
- Optional: a profile picture (avatar) taken with the camera or uploaded from your gallery.
Important storage information: All the above data is stored exclusively on your mobile device . The Service Provider has no access to it and does not transmit it to external servers.
2. Control over your data
You have full control over your information:
- You may change your profile data within the application at any time.
- You may delete the data at any time by removing the user profile within the app or uninstalling the application.
3. Permissions
For profile pictures and photo import, the application may request access to your device's camera or file storage . Profile pictures are displayed locally; photo import processing depends on the selected local or cloud AI method.
4. Disclosure to third parties
The profile data described above is stored locally. When you use optional cloud AI, the content selected for the feature is transmitted to the Google Gemini AI service:
- Photo import: the selected photos.
- Vocabulary chat: the selected vocabulary and chat messages.
- Stories: the selected vocabulary and chosen topic.
- Example sentences: the relevant vocabulary item and associated request.
This content leaves your device during cloud processing, which requires internet access. Locally stored profile data is distinct from content selected for cloud features. Local AI methods process content on the device.
Regional cloud AI selection
For users the app identifies as being in the EEA, Switzerland or the United Kingdom, managed cloud AI excludes Free Tier projects and uses Gemini projects with active billing (Paid). This also applies within the free app version's cloud quota; no Premium purchase is required. Outside these regions, Free Tier projects may also be used subject to Google's terms. Copyright markings are additionally taken into account when selecting a project.
To determine the region, the app checks available mobile network and SIM country information and the device locale's country setting on the device. This information is used to select the cloud project.
Your own Gemini API key: Personal keys remain available as an alternative. Google's regional requirements and terms also apply to the associated project; active billing is required in the EEA, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
Local language models: After downloading the model, AI processing takes place on the device. The processed content is not sent to Gemini and incurs no Gemini API charges.
No storage in the Service Provider's own backend: The Service Provider does not store content sent for these cloud AI features or generated responses in its own backend.
Google processes the submitted content as the Gemini API provider under the applicable Gemini API terms. For abuse monitoring, Google documents retention of prompts, contextual information and responses for 55 days (abuse monitoring documentation; checked on 31 October 2026). The absence of storage in the Service Provider's backend does not mean that Google retains no data.
Under its Paid Services terms, Google does not use inputs and responses to improve its products. For Free Services outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, content may be used to improve Google products and processed by human reviewers. The linked terms for the Google project actually used apply.
5. Children
The application is not used to knowingly collect data from children under 13. Profile data described above remains on the device. Section 4 explains the transmission of selected content for cloud AI. Parents are nevertheless asked to supervise use.
6. Security
Protecting your data matters to us. Profile data stored locally on your device is subject to your operating system's security mechanisms (e.g. smartphone storage encryption).
7. Contact
